Mykonos is a favorite summer destination of people from all over the world. But as the summer months roll in, so do the throngs of tourists and cruises. With a limited amount of time on this magical island, it’s important to maximize your visit and not waste time navigating through lost tourists and tricky streets. Learn how to get around Mykonos like a local!
Bus
The bus is the most economical way to get around the island. For less than 2 Euro, you can take the bus to almost anywhere on the island. The bus station is called Fabrica and is located in town.
Pros:
- Take the bus to any beach
- Less than 2 Euro
Cons:
- Usually only one bus an hour
- To go from place to place, one must connect at Fabrica
Taxi
Taxi’s are very limited on the island, and by very I mean, very. There are only ~30 taxi’s on the island and with the 15,000+ visitors on some summer days, that means cabs are hard to come by.
Pros:
- Direct service from anywhere on the island
- Save time
Cons:
- Hard to find
- Expensive
- Usually need to call to find a cab
Water Taxi
Because there are so many beaches on the island, Mykonos has a water taxi! These are not as cheap as a bus, but the water taxi’s are a direct way to beach hop.
Pros:
- Beach hop without having to go back to town
- Easily skirt from beach to beach
- ~4 Euro One-Way
Cons:
- Limited number of water taxi’s
- Not frequent
ATV / Scooter
Renting an ATV or a scooter is an economical and direct way to get around Mykonos. Want to hop from town to a beach, but don’t want to wait for public transportation? ATV’s and Scooters are a quick and easy way to get around. However, the streets are windy and can be dangerous, with lots of accidents occurring over the crowded summer months. If you’re going to rent an ATV or scooter, you should be a confident driver and take out insurance.
Pros:
- Economical
- Direct
Cons:
- Windy, dangerous roads
Car Rental
Given the dangerous and windy roads of Mykonos, your safest bet for a self-hired rental is a car.
Pros:
- Safer than ATV’s
- Direct
Cons:
- Can still be dangerous
- Can be pricey
