Travel is a privilege first & foremost. That being said, travel in 2020 is a very sensitive subject that can be dealt with by putting public health first, following the rules, and respecting others. It’s important to remember that risk is a spectrum and not binary – especially with covid travel. There are many shades of grey. If you are going to venture out, there are ways that you can mitigate risk, protect public health, support the tourism industry, & still roam responsibly.
Covid Travel Tips
- Safety first. It is imperative first and foremost to put safety and public health above everything: above relationships, above finances, & above personal interest. Avoid groups, practice physical distancing, & wear a mask. Take all necessary steps to minimize health risks to yourself & others and stay home if you’re sick.
- Education. Research the destination that you’re traveling to verify local regulations & community concerns. This is especially important in rural communities that may have limited hospitals and healthcare professionals.
- Travel locally. Take a staycation & support your local economy & small businesses in a responsible and safe way.
- Choose self sustainable & socially distanced travel. There are methods of travel that mitigate risk including self sustainable & outdoor travel. Rent an RV through Outdoorsy & take a road trip or go camping!
- Stay home & postpone. If you can stay home & postpone your trip (especially around the holidays or if you’re from a high risk area), stay home. You don’t need to cancel trips, but look to postpone them to 2021.

- Get tested. While you shouldn’t rely on testing, it does add another layer to the safety net. Consider getting a RT-PCR COVID-19 test before you go and when you return home. Some destinations, like French Polynesia, require a negative PCR test before & after.
- Tip well. 243 million+ people work in the tourism industry and over 24 million of those lost their jobs in 2020. People in the tourism industry have been suffering for months now. If you do decide to travel, please help support the tourism industry & tip well.
- Prepare for the unexpected: Rules and laws are changing daily. Have a back up plan, travel insurance, pack hand sanitizer & masks. Be flexible with your plans as they may need to change last minute.
Americans can travel to Tahiti, but the country requires a negative RT-PCR Covid Test prior to entering.
